Howards Way

Provisional Licence

You will need a provisional licence before you can start your driving lessons.

You can apply for your Provisional Licence by obtaining a D1 form from your local Post Office or alternatively you can apply online . A £50 fee is required to process your application and it usually takes about 4 weeks for your Provisional Licence to be sent to you.

Theory Test

The driving theory test consists of 2 parts; the multiple choice section which tests your knowledge of the highway code and the Hazard Perception Test which assesses your ability to identify potential hazards in everyday driving scenarios. You will need to pass both parts of the Theory Test and a fail in one section will mean you need to retake both parts.

A pass in the theory test is required before you can take your practical test but not required to start driving lessons, in fact the practical experience usually means you will have a better chance of passing.

Practical Test

Once you are ready for your practical test you can apply to take it with your local DSA centre or online.

Before you do any driving you will be asked to perform an eyesight check (Reading a licence place from 20 metres away) and asked some basic safety questions.

During the 'driving' part of the test which lasts about 40 minutes the examiner will look for evidence that you have obtained a safe driving standard both for yourself and other people. You can make up to 15 minor faults during your test, any more than 15 minor faults or 1 major fault and you will fail the test.

You must bring the following items with you or the DSA may refuse to carry out the test and you could lose your fee:

  • Your theory test pass certificate.
  • Your practical test confirmation letter.
  • Both parts of your driving licence.
  • You will also need an appropriately insured and licensed vehicle that is displaying L-plates which I can provide.

Recommended Materials

The most important piece of reading for all drivers is The Highway Code and is available in its entirety online. All of the questions in the Theory Test are from The Highway Code so make sure you know it back to front!

Full Licence

Congratulations you passed! You can now get out on the road. Don't forget that you now need to notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and exchange your test pass certificate and provisional driving licence for a new 'Full' driving licence as soon as possible.
